We are excited to announce that the Bata Shoe Factory has been honoured with a 2024 AIA International Design Award, presented by the American Institute of Architects. This prestigious award recognizes excellence in design, best practices, and innovative thinking, celebrating the transformation of this historic factory into a vibrant mixed-use residential community.

Working alongside Dubbeldam Architecture + Design, BDP Quadrangle re-envisioned the historic Bata Shoe Factory in Batawa, Ontario. Originally built in 1939, this once-thriving industrial hub has been transformed into a modern mixed-use development. The revitalized building now features retail spaces, community amenities, and 47 rental units, all while maintaining much of its historical character. By preserving the original concrete structure and incorporating contemporary elements like cantilevered balconies and wood accents, the project serves as a model for rural sustainable development, blending heritage with modern design to create a vibrant community hub.

Moreover, the focus on sustainability is also demonstrated by the use of geothermal energy systems and the preservation of 80% of the building's original embodied carbon. This commitment to environmental stewardship underscores the project's forward-thinking approach to adaptive reuse.

Warm congratulations to everyone who contributed to this award-winning project!
