The University of Waterloo's Inclusive Physical Space Framework was recently honored at the 2024 Canadian Association of University Business Officers (CAUBO) annual conference, receiving a prestigious award from the CAUBO Quality and Productivity Awards Program. This award-winning framework, recognized for its innovative approach to designing physical spaces that prioritize accessibility, well-being, and sustainability, represents a significant advancement in how inclusive design is approached within the post-secondary sector and beyond.
Human Space, our inclusive design practice, played a crucial role in the development and success of this framework. The team collaborated closely with the University of Waterloo’s Plant Operations, Disability Inclusion, Human Resources, and Sustainability Office to bring this visionary project to life. By conducting an extensive environmental scan of technical standards, engaging with the community through surveys, and integrating insights from disability advocates and individuals with lived experiences, we helped create a resource that is now widely shared across the post-secondary sector and has the potential to benefit other sectors such as municipalities. The award, accepted by Jacinda Reitsma, Vice-President, Administration and Finance at the University of Waterloo, underscores our commitment at Human Space to advancing inclusive design and making a lasting impact on the built environment.
Congratulations to the entire team for this outstanding achievement!
